I love this time of the year, when we can have every activity totally focus on the Savior- not that we can’t all the time, but there is a special feeling at Christmas time to really bring the spirit. We have done several “Progressive Christmas” activities as a ward and RS, but I thought it would be way fun to do it as Combined with the Young Men or just all the girls.
Start at the Church:
Opening song: Samuel tells of the Baby Jesus- page 36 in Childrens Song Book (you could always just play it, if not everyone knows it)
Move to the parking lot. Samuel, the Lamanite stands on the Church’s wall fence in costume. He is flooded with lights. (a drama student would be perfect or any YM or leader willing to do it)
Narrator: And it came to pass that in this year there was one Samuel, a Lamanite, came into the land of Zarahemla, and began to preach unto the people. And it came to pass that he did preach, many days, repentance unto the people, and they did cast him out, and he was about to return to his own land.
But behold, the voice of the Lord came unto him, that he should return again, and prophesy unto the people whatsoever things should come into his heart.
And it came to pass that they would not suffer that he should enter into the city; therefore he went and got upon the wall thereof, and stretched forth his hand and cried with a loud voice, and prophesied unto the people whatsoever things the Lord put into his heart.
And behold he said unto them:
Samuel: Behold I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name.
And behold, this will I give unto you for a sign at the time of his coming; for behold, there shall be great lights in heaven, insomuch that in the night before he cometh there shall be no darkness, insomuch that it shall appear unto man as if it was day.
Therefore, there shall be one day and a night and a day, as if it were one day and there were not night; and this shall be unto you for a sign; for ye shall know of the rising of the sun and also of its setting; therefore they shall know of a surety that there shall be two days and a night; nevertheless the night shall not be darkened; and it shall be the night before he is born.
And behold, there shall a new star arise, such an one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you.
(Helaman 13:2-4, 14:2-5)

Go to someone’s home- have some finger foods or just hot chocolate-
We had someone read the last part of Dr. Suess’s “How the Grinch stole Christmas” (Taken from President Holland Talk “Maybe Christmas Doesn’t Come from a Store”)
Three thousand feet up! Up the side of Mt. Crumpit
He rode with his load to the tiptop to dump it!
“pooh-Pooh to the Whos!” he was grinch-ishly humming.
“they’re finding out now that no Christmas is coming!
They’re just waking up! I know just what they’ll do!
Their mouths will hand open…. ect.
You can download his talk w/ the poem

after the poem I bore my testimony of the real meaning of Christmas and how important it is to keep things into perspective- all the giving and gifts are wonderful, but we need “to remember the very plain scene, even the poverty, of a night devoid of tinsel or wrapping or goods of this world. r de Only when we see that single, sacred, unadorned object of our devotion- the Babe of Bethlehem- will we know why “tis the season to be jolly” and why the giving of gifts is so appropriate”- President Holland
Go to another home-Perfect for desserts- The Bishops home would be perfect for this
We showed the “Luke II” video muted with Amy Grant song “Breath of Heaven” playing to it.
It’s not long and it is beautiful.
And then our Bishop talked a little about Christmas and Jesus Christ.
It was a great night- the spirit was so strong.
Obviously any of these things can be switched up- use the talent in your ward for musical presentations etc. I promise your night will be filled with the spirit and your youth will love it.
