Sew What!

Sew What?

Modest clothing can sometimes be hard to find or when found can be expensive.  We wanted the girls to know that there are other options such as sewing their own.  Maybe one day in their life they might need this skill or just want to start sewing their own cute clothes.  We got our hands on a pattern (hand made), 3 sizes, we went down to Jo-Anne with coupons and purchased 15- 1 yard material.  The girls were to bring $10 per skirt – to cover cost of material and who ever got there first got first dibs on the material we purchased.  We wanted the skirts to be easy enough to finish in one night & we did not want them to get frustrated with zippers etc (not yet anyway)

We worked with each Young Women to help her pin and cut out her skirt.

Some girls got creative and used left over material to make head bands to match their skirts.

While the girls were not sewing they were able to pass of some Personal Progress while they were waiting for a Sewing Machine to open up

During the down time the girls wrote letters to Missionaries who were out serving from out ward.

We were able to finish 12 skirts that night, I think we may have gone a little late (9:15 ish) but it was well worth it- Just look at the beautiful smiles on Sunday

It is really fun to look around on Sundays and see some of the skirts they made.  A great resource can be Modern Girls Guide to sewing. Her website can give the girls tips and tricks to sewing and making clothes custom to themselves.

Check out this web site for the pattern
